Before booking your NZ learner theory test: a checklist

In this guide

  2. Confirm requirements with the agent
  3. Arrange support before test day
  4. Check the total cost at the source
  5. Plan the visit
  6. Check the date of the guidance

Choose the correct application route

NZTA says you must be at least 16 to apply for a car learner licence. If you have an overseas licence or a different licence situation, check the appropriate pathway instead of assuming the first-time learner process applies. This site and the NZ Learner app do not process applications or book official tests.

Confirm requirements with the agent

Use the official application page to identify the documents and checks needed for your circumstances. Then confirm any uncertainty directly with the agent you plan to visit. Do not rely on a friend's experience with a different application. Make a private checklist; there is no need to send identity documents to NZ Learner support.

Arrange support before test day

If you need language or reading support, discuss the available arrangements with the licensing agent before booking. An app's translation menu does not establish which languages or assistance are offered for an official test. Ask how support is arranged and whether it affects the appointment you should choose.

Check the total cost at the source

Official application and test charges are separate from a practice app's purchase price. Check the current fee and rebooking conditions through NZTA or your agent, especially if you need another attempt. Avoid relying on an old blog's quoted fee. This website does not accept licence payments.

Plan the visit

Confirm your appointment location and time, plan the journey and prepare the requested documents. Give yourself time to arrive without rushing. Before the visit, review your weak topics rather than starting a last-minute marathon of random questions. If something changes, contact the agent about the available options.

Check the date of the guidance

NZTA has announced car licensing changes from 25 January 2027. Until then, its current process applies. If your learning crosses that date, revisit the official application guidance rather than relying on an old timetable for progressing to the next licence stage.
