Getting started

How to get your New Zealand learner licence

Your learner licence is the beginning of learning to drive, not the end of it. Here is a practical way to organise the steps without confusing the licence application with downloading a study app.

In this guide

  1. Check that you are on the right pathway
  2. Prepare your documents before choosing a test date
  3. Build a study routine you can repeat
  4. Keep application costs separate from study-app costs
  5. After passing, plan your first supervised sessions

Check that you are on the right pathway

For a New Zealand Class 1 car learner licence, you must be at least 16. Apply through a driver licensing agent when you are ready. If you already hold an overseas licence, check NZTA’s guidance for your situation rather than assuming the first-time learner route applies.

Prepare your documents before choosing a test date

NZTA requires acceptable evidence of identity and an eyesight check or qualifying certificate. Read its application-requirements page before your visit; the documents needed can depend on your circumstances. Contact your chosen agent if you are unsure what it will accept.

Build a study routine you can repeat

Start with the current Road Code and choose one topic for each session. After reading, try a few questions, then explain the reasoning without looking at the answers. Keep a short list of uncertainties: a sign you confuse, a sentence you misread or a diagram you rushed. This gives your next session a purpose instead of simply repeating familiar questions.

Keep application costs separate from study-app costs

Check the application and test charges with NZTA or your licensing agent before you pay. A study-app upgrade does not pay your official test fee, book your appointment or issue a licence. NZ Learner’s planned Pro price is a separate one-time app purchase, and purchasing is not available yet.

After passing, plan your first supervised sessions

A car learner must drive with an eligible supervisor and display L plates. Before you start, read the conditions that apply to your licence. Plan a suitable practice location with your supervisor and agree how you will communicate during the lesson.

Independent guidance, not a licensing service. Check current official requirements with NZTA and your driver licensing agent. App results do not guarantee an official test result.
