NZ learner theory test: questions, pass mark and test day

Knowing what happens at the test centre lets you focus on the questions. Separate the official test format from any practice app’s design, scoring or question count.

Know the format

The Class 1 learner theory test is computer-based. It has 35 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 32 correct answers to pass. Drive describes a 30-minute time allowance and feedback showing whether each answer was correct.

Prepare for the appointment

Drive advises bringing proof of identity and arriving at least 10 minutes before the test. Check your appointment instructions as well, particularly if your application checks still need completing. Confirm where to go and how you will get there before test day.

Read the whole situation

In a question with a picture, identify what the question is asking before choosing an answer. Notice signs, road markings and the positions of the vehicles. Avoid assuming that a similar-looking picture means the same answer. If you catch yourself answering from memory, pause and explain the rule to yourself.

Use practice results as information

A good mock result can help you spot progress, but it cannot guarantee the official result. Review correct guesses as carefully as wrong answers. Try an unassisted attempt when you want to check your understanding, and use explanations during learning sessions. An assisted score answers a different question: what can you do with help?

Arrange reading or language support early

NZTA lists translated test options and arrangements for readers or interpreters. Ask your licensing agent about the appropriate arrangements before your appointment. The language choices inside an independent app are not proof that the official test offers the same languages.

If the result is not a pass

Drive explains that an unsuccessful attempt means booking another test. Confirm the current rebooking rules and charges with the agent. Before trying again, write down the topics you found difficult and return to the Road Code. A targeted review is more useful than rushing straight into repeated random practice.

Independent guidance, not a licensing service. Check current official requirements with NZTA and your driver licensing agent. App results do not guarantee an official test result.
